As we head into this next phase of managing the pandemic with a slightly heavy heart, a way to frame this is that having developed coping strategies over the last 6 months, will make it easier to deal with, the next time around.
By all means, perfect that second /third language or master that musical instrument if you wish, however my advice is to dial the expectation down with these simple and achievable tips:
1. Kindness: Be kind to yourself, up and down days are inevitable. Also try to show empathy with others who may be experiencing high stress or anxiety levels.
2. Energy levels: Try to focus on what you can control, plan little things that give you and others joy and avoid the news if it gets you down.
3. Fresh air: Being outside for 30 mins a day will improve your mood and energy levels. Make it easier by investing in a decent waterproof jacket and boots.
4. Strive for Balance: Plan your week in advance so you have a reasonable split between, work, home, sleep and exercise. Set achievable daily goals, take lots of breaks, do not over-plan or pile on pressure to achieve.
5. Support Buddy: Check in daily with a friend with whom you can share openly and honestly to see how each other is doing.
6. Work/Home Hygiene: Try to stick to normal working hours where possible, shut your laptop and put it away, out of sight. Take a walk or do something active to draw a line under the working day.
7. Mind your mood: Ease off the booze until the weekend and limit the quantities.
